Ignisfang, Blade of the Copper Wyrm

Item Type:

Weapon (longsword or shortsword), rare (requires attunement)

Description:

This masterfully forged blade rests in a carved wooden scabbard inlaid with glowing threads of aged copper, engraved with curling flames and old draconic script. The hilt mirrors this craftsmanship, with a warm copper-and-wood grip wrapped in sturdy dragon-hide lacing.

Most striking of all is the golden dragon-shaped crossguard, its wings outstretched and mouth open as if in an eternal roar. When the blade strikes true, the dragon’s eyes flicker with light, and flames erupt from its mouth, channeling down the length of the blade.

Weapon Properties:

  • Functions as a +1 magical sword (longsword or shortsword; DM’s choice or based on user preference).

  • Flame Channel (Passive): On a successful hit, the sword deals an additional 1d4 fire damage as the golden dragon breathes fire along the blade.

  • The fire ignites flammable objects not being worn or carried (DM’s discretion).

  • When drawn in darkness, the dragon’s mouth glows faintly — shedding dim light in a 5-foot radius.

Special Ability – Dragon’s Whisper (Optional, 1/day):

As a bonus action, the wielder may whisper a word in Draconic and cause the golden dragon to emit a burst of flame (15-ft cone, DC 13 Dex save, 3d6 fire damage on fail, half on success). Once used, this feature cannot be used again until the next dawn.

Attunement Requirements:

The wielder must have proficiency with martial weapons and have shown respect or reverence toward dragons — whether in history, worship, or personal code. The blade resists those who slay dragons needlessly.

Lore:

Said to be forged in the forge-temple of Durnek’s Hollow, where dwarves and dragonkin once worked side by side, Ignisfang was gifted to a human knight who had earned the trust of a copper wyrm. The dragon imbued the blade’s crossguard with a spark of her flame — which lives on to this day. Some say the dragon still watches through the golden eyes of the hilt.

⚠️ Adventurer’s Disclaimer:

May cause warm hands, singed cloaks, and unintentional intimidation. Keep away from flammable familiars. Do not use to toast marshmallows unless you enjoy fire damage to the face.
