Ahh, the Verdant Dragonroot Staff.** Carved from an ancient tree struck by lightning and wrapped in the scales of a copper dragon, this staff hums with the laughter of an old forest spirit. I've seen it stir to life in the hands of a druid once—twirled it like a cane, summoned a storm, and then politely asked a bear to leave a tavern. True story.**
Verdant Dragonroot Staff Staff, very rare (requires attunement by a Druid, Ranger, or Nature Domain Cleric)
This elegant staff is a fusion of old wood, living copper, and dragon scale. Spiraling copper inlays form runes that glow faintly in moonlight, and the top of the staff is crowned with a knot of twisted roots that form the serene face of an old man—a wood spirit—wearing a dragon-shaped crown made of copper and green energy. The crown shimmers with a subtle, pulsing magic that glows green and bronze, whispering of ancient power.
Properties
-
Nature’s Whisper: While attuned to the staff, the wielder can understand the Draconic language and the communications of plants as if under a constant Comprehend Languages effect. This does not allow the wielder to speak to them.
-
Rooted Resilience: When planted in the ground as an action, the staff casts Entangle centered on itself once per short rest. While standing within the affected area, the wielder has half cover.
-
Copper Pulse: Once per long rest, the staff can release a 15-foot cone of crackling green-and-bronze energy. Each creature in the cone must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 15) or take 4d6 acid damage and be pushed 10 feet away. On a success, they take half damage and are not pushed.
-
Draconic Kinship: The bearer has advantage on Charisma checks made to interact with metallic dragons.
Sentience (Optional Variant)
The spirit within the staff is a slumbering fey being—grumpy, slow to wake, but deeply protective of the natural world. If awakened (at the DM’s discretion), it may offer cryptic advice, hum to itself, or refuse to let the staff be used to harm a tree.
Lore
Legends say this staff was once wielded by a sage who made peace between a copper dragon and a faerie grove. It’s said the dragon’s scales were a gift, offered in gratitude, and the staff’s wood was cut from a branch that fell naturally during the Great Storm of the Verdant March.
*Disclaimer: The Verdant Wyrmroot Staff is not responsible for talking to squirrels, attracting lightning, or convincing you to hug trees. The old man face does not actually talk (probably), and no real dragons were harmed in its crafting. It does however have 2 battery packs which power LED lights in the selenite crystals located in the crown and on the staff about 1/3 of the way up; as well as the eyes of the dragon and tree spirit. *
